This hybrid compressed air storage hydropower plant utilizes a completely new concept for energy storage.
It has been designed to store and release volatile energy to ensure continuous power supply during peak load periods and low-light conditions. By combining the advantages of adiabatic compressed air storage with those of a hydraulic hydropower plant, my concept ensures nearly loss-free power restoration. In my design, the compressed air is converted into pressurized water before being used for power generation. This pressurized water drives a water turbine connected to a generator to produce electricity. This arrangement eliminates all existing issues with compressed air storage power plants. The conversion of compressed air into pressurized water achieves a much higher efficiency of over 92% compared to a gas turbine’s 37-40%.
Key Benefits of This Hybrid Compressed Air Storage Hydropower Plant:
- Does not require topographical elevation, allowing for installation anywhere.
- Can be built near wind farms or PV systems.
- Can be situated close to urban areas, saving long transmission routes.
- Cycle-resistant, with no need for replacement or recycling of operational media.
- In case of failure, only compressed air or water may escape, posing no environmental risk.
- Capacity is scalable as needed.
- Capable of black start.
This green energy storage system will significantly accelerate the energy transition.
